A year in reflection?

Well I wanted to reflect back on what this last year has been like...and then I remembered....I can't even remember what tasks I completed last freakin week for crying out loud!!!!
I guess this is the beginning of my realization as I turn 40 in a few days...that things are not like they were even 10 years ago!!!!
10 years ago, I was just turning 30....and I remember looking back at those ten years and thinking....what have I accomplished. NOW...as I turn the corner to the new decade of the 40's and I think...OH CRAP....what I have I accomplished....and after the heart rate comes down, I realize....I have accomplished A LOT!
I have always lived my life without any regrets, I won't change a darn thing, not the good the bad or the ugly...it's all MY life and I like it....just wish I could remember all of it LOL.
I remember as a kid being irritated when my parents did not remember things, things that I thought were so simple and how in the freakin world could they NOT remember...well...I am now that age, and I have kids that say "oh Mom, you remember......" and I look at them with that blank stare, and they get irritated with ME now!!!!
Well, this last year brought more and new experiences, some I remember vividly, others I won't remember til someone reminds me of it, either way, I feel like it was a great year.
So I will bid this year and my 30's a goodbye, and welcome my 40's with open arms, cause one thing I know for sure....you always get wiser with age! So bring it on I say, my boobs can't sag any lower then they already are, the weird bristly dark hairs that grow from my chin can't shock me anymore then they already have, the aches and pains can only get worse, but I can be wiser with how I deal with them..and the list can go on.
So with that, it ends my year in reflection, short, sweet, and now I move on!!!!! Happy New Year all!!!!

Merry Schnitzel Christmas

Even the dog is relaxing!

Merry Christmas from the Cariboo
Schnitzel prep
Finished Schnitzel
Anything bacon is acceptable lol
Good ol cooking stove :-)
Yummy meal
Bacon topped stuffing

A very Merry Christmas from our family to the internet world. We celebrated our Christmas today Dec 24. My husband is German, and it's become our tradition to carry on. We decided that since I have to work on the real Christmas day and won't be making a traditional turkey, we'd go for the German themed meal. Schnitzel and mashed potatoes and bacon topped stuffing! It was soooooooo yummy.  Okay, so the only German thing is the Schnitzel lol, but it was darn good.
After work tomorrow, we have been invited for a wonderful traditional turkey Christmas feast at a neighbors house, so we won't miss out on a good ol stuff your face feast, where afterwards we will all be in a turkey coma! It's so great to know that I won't have to do any cooking, just come home from work and dig in and enjoy!
We had a really great frugal Christmas this year too. Although we spent money on the kid, we did not spend money on each other. ( me and the hubster ) We decided that this Christmas we would only get each other things we found at the share shed. Well what a blast we had, and opening them was even funner. Just knowing that your spouse had to be innovative and be a good junk picker was so freakin funny. We both had no idea what the other one would come up with or find, cause it's always a shot in the dark with finding good things at the share shed. Well, we both did great and had sooooooooo much fun. I'll take a share shed Christmas any day over a "over priced, over spent, go in debt" one.
Happy Holidays everyone!

Stuff we find for free at the Share Shed & Dump!

This is what the Share Shed looks like
So now you can see some pictures of the madness that has taken over this house. FREE STUFF....seemed so weird to us when we first moved here from the city. This share shed thing was GREAT. You can just drive up, and take anything you want because it's left there by others for that purpose. We have taken many things there ourselves too, but we tend to take more goodies than drop off lol!
Over the last few years this is a list of some of things we have found and brought home:
lawnmowers (three to be exact, all work perfectly, I tend to break them so it's really great)
rototillers (two, one electric one gas powered)
beds and frames
many many tools
garden tools and fencing
books
computer AND printers
fridge
games
futons
jars
cans (we love weekenders..peeps from the city, cause they leave all their empties at the shed before they leave, and then we come along and take them in and get anywhere from 5 bucks to 50 bucks, depends on how good the haul is LOL) oh stop it, I'M NOT CHEAP...IT'S FREE MONEY!!!
This list goes on, but you get my point...ANYTHING and EVERYTHING has been seen at the dump and share shed. We have seen full cars, a old ambulance, boats (tons of those in the summer) some good some not so good, usually everyone goes and pilfers what they need off of them lol. There is a local saying around here when you are showing someone what you have, they'll ask you where you got that, and you just tell them at the "mall" and everyone knows you mean the dump LMAO
So anyways, this is what us crazy country folk like doing...share shedding...what a romantical way to spend a few hours with my hubby!!!!
Awesome amount of cookie cutters!
Awesome man thingy my husband loves LMAO

White dresser found at the SS

Gazebo found at SS
Yup, even plants in pots are left there!

Things I have learned to live with and without.

This is my clothes dryer
Wood heat
VERY small propane stove
My oldie but goodie
Since moving from the city 3 years ago, my attitude about my wants and needs has changed! How or why this happened.....ummmmmmm, not sure...it just did...and I like it quite frankly. It's made me a better person.
I no longer HAVE to have the best of everything or the desire to have the best of it all. I am very content with things that work and not things that are sparkly and brand new lol. For example, we heat with a wood stove. There is no getting up and just turning the thermostat up and getting the house warm, it's all about carrying the wood in, getting a few days worth next to the stove and starting one or keeping it going, even if it's 3am and your freakin cold! Our stove is not brand new, we got it for $60 and it works like a charm, heats our house just fine.
My old washing machine, it's not one of those fancy ol front loaders, it's one of those oldies, but hey, it cleans my clothes, and since we have well water it's better anyways, the new machine would get ruined by the iron that would go thru it. (we don't have a water softener yet) As for a dryer....well as you can see from the pic, my clothes hang to dry on a line inside in the winter, and outside for the rest of the time. At first it bugged me, not having those wonderfully soft clothes from the dryer, but now, WHO CARES, if I need them softened up, I can take a quick iron over them, no biggy. In the winter, the clothes dry faster inside anyways with the wood heat in the house. So not only are we saving on heating costs (all the wood is off of our land) and no dryer which means electric bill is not sky high from dryer use. (not that it's a HUGE amount, but something is better then nothing)
So, since we are in renovations here for the last three years and probably for the next 5 lol, there are lots of things not yet hooked up or put in yet. We have a On Demand hot water system, bathtub, new Schluter shower, toilets, ect. So for now, the SMALL propane stove I am using is just fine, it only holds the smallest of cookie sheets and you can only put in a very small turkey but that's okay with me. You work with what you have!
As many of you know, I lived without a TOILET for two years as well. At first it was difficult, but over time you learn to live with it. It's amazing what you get used to, and what your able to tolerate. If I can do THAT, I can do anything. I am however, VERY happy to a have a nice flushing toilet now!
I no longer need to have what the neighbors have, or what the latest and greatest thing is, I am content with what works! This lifestyle is not for everyone, but it's for me!!!!

Ummmm, what's wrong with this picture?

Besides EVERYTHING lol.Well, as you can see, my crochet learning is STILL going strong. However, as you can see in the pic, the white one started out with like 24 stitches, and then somehow went down to 14, and then gained some again...and the blue one has some crazy dipsy doodle thing right from the get go on the bottom lol. I swear I am NOT drinking wine and crocheting!!!! So it's not clear to me yet as to what I am doing wrong, and my teacher has not been at work to be able to ask...anyone out in cyber world have any advice lol? So last night I am laying in my chair, practicing, and my husband chirps from the other side of the couch "your doing it wrong, your not holding the needle right"....WELL......I give him the "look"...kept going...like seriously, is this man insane? What does HE know about crocheting...lol...SOOOOOOOOO apparently when he was a small boy his Mom taught him this. So I tossed him the yarn and needle and said "have at her smarty pants"...so there he stood....talking to himself, thread and needle in hand....and this pleased my devilish side....to know that he was going to go as crazy as I was over this!!!! And yes...he did...and it was great!!!!!
So....we now are BOTH practicing....yeah...great....now I am going to be competing with my husband for crochet patterns and ideas....why does this seem wrong on so many levels LMAO.

Chicken sweaters?

I found this on a blog tonight and I could not believe my eyes! WOW...I have seen people put sweaters on dogs and other pets....but CHICKENS...ummmmm I am so gonna make some of these once I get more professional at this whole crochet think lol. Why you ask!!! Ummmm WHY NOT....I just think it's one of those crazy things I just have to have and make lol.

Crochet craziness!

This is my teacher Megan and I at work today, and she has finally had a break through with my learning brain! She was nice and brave enough to teach me how to crochet. I had asked every old lady I knew in town, but no one had time, and I happened to be mentioning this at work in the staff room. Well, wouldn't you know it, from the person I least expected to know how to do this....MEGAN....and she's a GENIUS at it too! Like seriously good at it...so good, she doesn't even have to follow patterns, she has made a serious art out of it and I am in awe of her!
However, I don't think she expected to have to like really really dumb it down for me. I tried warning her..."Megan...I really have NO clue what to do or how to start or even how to hold a needle" LOL. So our first 2 min lesson last week at work was how to hold the needle, next day at work, was how to tie the knot to get started, and then the next day at work she taught me how to do my first knot...WELL..she showed me a few times, I did it myself a few times and then she sent me home with some homework to try at home...ummmmmmmmmm well.....that didn't turn out so good! lol I got home that night, sat in bed, took out the needle and wool.....and.....NOTHING...had NO clue what I was taught. So back to square one....today she took some time with me and REALLY got me going this time....I was so excited at work about FINALLY understanding what to do with the needle you would have thought I won the lottery. So for the next week, I shall be stitching away squares and scarves like a crazy woman. Once I have that down pat, she will teach me how to make my first toque!
So my dream of learning how to crochet my first toque before I am 40 might actually come true! However, I only have a few more weeks to get that dream done! Anyways...I must get back to my crocheting madness!

My tongue bleeds....often!

BITE YOUR TONGUE..........

That is often the thought that goes thru my head...and then something happens...the brain to mouth filter switches OFF!
Seriously....there's got to be an app for that somewhere that can be installed in my brain somehow lol. However...sometimes it's a good thing. Either way...I have had both good and bad experiences from the loss of my filter.
Working in the customer service industry, my tongue is bitten daily, and sometimes quite often in a day. Other days it seems my tongue had the time to heal.
Yesterday....was not one of those days :-) I had the most customer service challenging experience TWICE. Oh yeah, it was MY day yesterday. How did I handle it.......ummmmmmmmmmm, probably not the way I should have, but it wasn't all that bad either. Geez...it could have been a lot worse....and people who are close to me or who know me and have worked with me will say and attest to this....it can ALWAYS be a lot worse with me LOL.
I won't go into great detail of what happened, but it all ended with me having to defend myself ONCE again LOL. The thing that really gets my goat, is when I have to defend my self when I was completely innocent of all charges. I really really think that someone needs to invent a mic system thingy that can be pinned into my name tag so that the all mighty office authorities can hear EXACTLY what went down and what was said by EVERYONE. Now THAT would be great! Maybe then, the office authorities would have some idea of the what happens in the trenches.
I often have a laugh to myself as to where I have come over the years and various jobs I have held, and what I have learned from them all, and what I have learned just from getting older. If this is what I am like at almost 40, I can't even imagine what my filter is going to be like at 50 or 60. Ahhhhhhhh the public should be very afraid.......cause my filter might just get thinner and thinner with age LMAO!

Bad economy? HUH?

Well that seems to be all I am hearing and reading. And yes, I can see some of the effects the economy is having in some areas. My hours have been cut waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back at my job at on of the local grocery store. I live in a really really small town about 30 km outside of a bigger smaller town lol. That bigger smaller town is the central location for lots of outer smaller towns. It's quite the meeting place for all of us crazy small towners to meet up, whether it be for supplies of groceries, gas, materials...or GOSSIP lol.
Well I have always heard about how hard it is to get jobs in small towns. Even when we were thinking of moving here a few years back...people were already warning me of the troubles I would have. Well....I have had no troubles getting a job. In fact, not only just getting one job..but two. In fact...I have had my pick of a few jobs already in my short time here. So, when I hear young kids or adults bitching about how there are no jobs, I feel like just smacking them. It seems that society has been a little spoiled...everyone only wants the "good" jobs. Well hell ya!!!! Who doesn't want a super duper great paying mon-fri benefit paying job!!! We all do! BUT, it's not what's always out there. Soooooooooooo....like in my case...you take what you can get...THEN...you make the best out of it!!! It seems to me that people just haven't suffered enough yet if they are still this picky. My parents always had the opinion that if you had two arms and two legs you had NO excuse!
Well, I may not have the "best" jobs in town, but I have TWO...and those TWO jobs help my family. Beggars can't be choosers! And so I am gonna have a blast with what I have been provided with. It's all about attitude I believe. Choice. How do you CHOOSE to be while at work. For me it's easy, I don't have to choose. I love work...ANY work, anytime someone wants to pay me to work, I'm a happy camper!
Could be worse, could be NO work, or work for next to NOTHING, or work and NO money...THEN I'd have something to complain about.
Yes, I make minimum wage, at two jobs that deal with the public...but if it wasn't for the public...I wouldn't have two jobs!!!
I REALLY REALLY have no time or respect for these kids who whine and bitch about no jobs, who aren't willing to work for what they can get, or go on welfare cause they are to freakin lazy, and then join things like occupy Vancouver and sit in a tent and smoke weed and bitch some more about the politics that they never voted for in the first place. And that's a proven fact....the stats are out there...PEOPLE ARE NOT VOTING...especially the young kids....specifically the ones protesting in Vancouver right now. Every time they interview one of those kids I just have to shake my head, cause half of them can't even put together ONE coherent sentence.
Ohhhhhhhhhhh boy, now THAT was quite the rant I just went on....sheesh.
Anyway......all I wanted to get across was this....if I can get a job..ANYONE can get a job....BUT..you have to have a GOOD attitude and be willing to actually WORK!
Wow, I feel a lot better now lol!

Naughty doggy!

Our dog Brooklyn, she loves toys, she loves tree's and roots and pretty much anything she can get her teeth on and starting tugging and pulling....we have seen the funniest things out of her. For example...there is a wooden walkway in our backyard that was built there probably 40 years ago, so it's VERY old and decrepit. So I guess one day Brooklyn was bored and so she thought she'd tear it up for us LOL...I walked around back and there were boards scattered ALL over the place, all I could do was laugh my ass off....I was imagining her tugging and pulling these things out of place, growling at them as if to tell them " you will not dominate me boards!!!!!!!!" LMAO
So this pic you see of her here, is from last week when she found one of my husbands duckies..he collects ducks, and well, these ducks were outside and she found them. This is what she looks like when she knows she probably shouldn't have what she has!
Brooklyn
P.S. No dogs were harmed after the making of this picture ( even if it was her owners duckie!) LMAO

I think winter has arrived!

Raspberries covered in snow

Garden area 1
These are various pics taken around the yard this morning. Winter has finally arrived here on our mountain. This is just a little bit of snow, later on in the winter months I will post pics of how crazy it gets here with the snow. I will look back at these pics in a few months and be so envious of the little amount of snow. Usually by this time of year, we have already had a few snow falls, so it was nice to have a little longer Fall season.

Apple tree's

Our road

Garden sign

Bird suet

Garden area 2 has gone to bed for the winter

Big ol tree in the yard

Winner is.......ME

Recently I was a winner of a great prize from this blog spot http://wasabihoneybee.blogspot.com/. If you go there you will see pictures of the great prizes I have won. All I did was enter her giveaway!
And then just the other day, I went to a local craft show here in town, and I was ANOTHER winner of a local artists door prize! I'm just saying...this winning is GREAT.
Anyone else out there winners lately? And if so, what was it!

Grow Op's Galore!

Well, really, need I say anymore! lol
I live in British Columbia! The province that has the highest rate of grow ops and from what the world seems to think, the best weed (marijuana). I could go on and on about the pro's and con's of the industry...and maybe I will just for one small moment, after all, I am not one to keep my mouth shut for very long on any subject lol.
Here's what I think. I think that if my kids were ever addicted to weed or smoked it on a regular basis I would kick their ass, and do everything I could to get them off of it, cause really....IT MAKES YOU STUPID!!!! I have yet to meet a SMART pot smoker, even the half ass smart ones usually are out to lunch in some aspect! Now if my parents or husband or relative were dieing of cancer and just wanted to have some pain relief in their final days, you better believe it I'd buy the best bag of weed I could find for them!
I moved from B.C to Alberta when I was 30, then back to BC just a few years ago, but this time I moved to the Cariboo area, and I thought living in the city was bad...WELL...the country has WAAAAAAAY more grow ops. In fact, we live on a mountain, dead end street, and in the first two weeks of moving to the middle of no where there were THREE grow op busts on our mountain!!! CRAZY. Now, today, three years later, there are STILL a crap load of grow ops, and since we are in such a small town, you hear things....gossip. So you tend to hear who has one who got busted etc. I live about 5 min from our local dump, and there are ALL kinds of crazy things that show up there. One day, I drove around the back of the dump area, and I swear it looked like a movie set. From a distance it looked like huge white umbrella's, you know the kind that they use when the are shooting gorgeous models and they need the right lighting? Well.......... there was all kinds of this stuff, except that is was metal, not nylon like a regular umbrella....there was a HUGE dismantled grow op all in pieces taken to the dump! Okay, so me and my husband are some what addicted to going to the dump...okay, we really LOVE it there...in fact, we call it the mall. LMAO. So we opened the trunk and started to go through what we could actually use and throw it in the car. There was some amazing things that would cost a crap load of money for me to buy, like about 10 rubber made totes (the BIG ones) and light fixtures that these crazy people used to hold the grow op lights, they are in the perfect shape for putting on shelving for me to start my plants in the spring when I still have three ft of snow to melt lol. Then there was a crap load of piping and tubing for the water system they had set up, so I piled all of that into the car so now I don't have to go to the local hardware store to buy my watering system for my new greenhouse!
Tonight when I stopped buy the dump, there was another "harvest" that had been done, and I came across about 20 bags of soil. I made two trips, and got a total of we LARGE bags of the soil. This is GREAT stuff, it's been fertilized nicely for me already, and since we have such crappy clay soil up here, it's a welcome addition to my garden soil and mulch pile. So to say I really HATE the grow ops here....well, I can really, cause when they are done with their illegal stuff and dump it, I come along and use it all for my legitimate stuff!
So yeah, there are pro's and con's to everything, it's just a matter how of you use what you find!!!!

Pumpkin over load!

Raw pumpkin

Pumpkin seeds ready for dehydrator

Pureed pumpkin

Cooked pumpkin

Well I am pretty sure I have enough pumpkin for the next 2 years, and all I got was two pumpkins. Sheesh...I can see how pumpkins would be the same problem as zucchini's, you always have waaaaaaaaay to much and can never get rid of it, and you pretty much bake and cook and freeze all you can. Well I can see why I will never GROW my own pumpkins, cause I seriously would have no idea what to do with them all.
Today I made three pumpkin pies, pumpkin cinnamon buns ( by the way, WOW, they were freakin good ). I have three large freezer bags filled with the pumpkin goop, and tomorrow I am going to make some pumpkin walnut loaf. THEN, I think I will be all pumpkin'd out!
I have to say though, making pumpkin pie from scratch for the first time was very rewarding and TOTALLY does no taste like store bought.
Here is one of the links I used: http://www.pickyourown.org/pumpkinpie.php and then for the ridiculously yummy buns, try this blog:
http://ahandmadelife.blogspot.com/2009/05/pumpkin-cinnamon-buns.html
So that was my Nov pumpkin experience, wonder what other new things I shall try this month :-)

Hoarding....LEAVES...HUH!

My leaf hoarding pile!
My greenhouse, half done :-)
The garden is put to bed for winter!
My horse manure hoard pile!
Well, as you can see from the pics I have posted from today, my garden is ready for winter, and greenhouse is ALMOST done. Most important part is done, sides can get done anytime really, even if I had to wait til spring for that. I received my last pile of horse poop before the snow flies, which makes me really happy, cause it can rot all winter long under the tarp and snow.
I was at the dump today and was sooooooooooooo happy to find a bunch of bags of leaves!!! Sick I know, like who gets excited about finding bags of leaves at the dump lol...ummmm ME! I was blog surfing the other day, and came across a garden blog that showed pics of how she grew her potato plants. BRILLIANT was all I could think. This lady took some chicken coop fencing, made like a barrel shape out of it, put some leaves in it, put a potato in the bottom, and once the potato plant sprouted, she would just keep adding leaves on top, and because it's all chicken wire, it keeps it all neat and tidy. Once she was ready to harvest, she just lifted the round fence barrel thing up and there were all the potato's! Clean and all! Oh man, that got me so excited for next years growing experiments! I have heard of people doing this with straw, never even thought of leaves!
My garden has all of it's lasagna layers in it and finally covered with about 8 bags of leaves that I had raked from a friends place. That makes me laugh....I have 12 acres, yet I have to GO SOMEWHERE else to get leaves....I however don't have tree's with leaves! So that might explain why I get so ridiculously happy with leaves. I have a few tree's in the yard that give us leaves, but not nearly enough for my gardening ideas and plans and desire for great compost!
So hopefully the snow stays away a while and I can still get some things done outside.
Happy Nov 1st to you all!

What a moment!

I had just started work yesterday, and everyone in the store was buzzing about the local lottery called Lotto Max, and how someone won $500,000. Now because we are in such a small town, non of us knew if it was just someone driving thru the town or if it was a local. Never in a million years did any of us think we would experience the discovery THAT day.
Well let me tell you....it was freakin amazing!!!!! I get goose bumps every time I tell the story.
So this lady ( who remain unnamed) comes in with her two kids to do some Saturday grocery shopping. Her husband had won a "free play" and he bought the extra on it. So she had the ticket and just thought she'd check it before starting her shopping. So she scanned it in the self scanner. She is STUNNED...on the screen it clearly reads 500,000 winner. So she asks the girl at the front for a pen to sign the ticket....right then and there, from the look on her face and how she was acting we all knew. So we confirmed it on the lotto machine, and she started her melt down lol. She just started screaming to her son...."mamma's gonna buy you a new motor bike finally" She could not stop shaking like a lunatic! She couldn't find her cell phone, she couldn't remember any numbers to call people....oh man...it was just so funny and yet so awesome to see.
So this lady is local, she is married with two smaller kids, they don't have much, her husband is on the road working, and I heard later, that he didn't find out till later that day....4:30 to be exact...can you imagine waiting THAT long to tell your spouse you won big!
Anyways...all of us around here are soooooooooooo happy for this family, as they totally deserve it, and yet we feel all so lucky to have witnessed this amazing discovery....there is just something so special about watching it all unfold right in front of your eyes! So go forth....and BUY AT TICKET.!

Started a new FB page

I have started a page called Trade Off. It all came about from an experience I had with another lady from another FB page.
I have joined this other fb page called BBB (Beg, Barrow, Barter), and on there one day, a lady was asked for large jars...like really really large jars. It so happened that I had 4 of them. She was willing to trade for some fresh organic veggies from her garden. Well...I was all over that! So she came to my work one day, and we made a trade...I got three bags of awesomeness from her garden. HUGE beets, and swiss chard. So we ate and froze the chard, and I canned the beets.
So it got me to thinking, I wonder if there are others out there that would like to trade stuff too, without having to worry about the money part. Just like the good ol days! Trade what you have, get something new and different!
So began the new Facebook page Trade Off. So far I have made two trades. A bread maker which I don't use because I have TWO of them, and a smaller canning pot that I don't use. In return, I am getting an awesome egg poacher and a new coffee pot (thank goodness, as mine smashed a few weeks back lol)
So I am looking forward to being part of something new..yet old!

Some pics of my garden

.
The Lasagna Garden
Here is what my garden looks like this fall.  In the process of lasagna gardening. As you can see, the pile of horse manure that was just dropped off yesterday. Today I was able to put on one layer on half of the garden that is getting the royal lasagna treatment. You can see that the one half already looked so much darker and healthier already compared to the light clay soil where I still have one row of potato's to dig up.
